He had only a sweatshirt to protect him from the bitter cold.
We should always be on the lookout for ways we can help others and show kindness and compassion to those in need, but during the holidays, it should be at the forefront of our minds. This time of year, love and joy are all around us and we are reminded of how much we have to be grateful for.
It’s easy, though, to get so caught up in the busyness of the holidays that we forget to stop and think of those around us. It’s stories like this one that remind us what is truly important in life.
Christina Calvo was out running errands in her hometown of Waterbury, Connecticut, when she noticed a man standing in the snow shivering. When she looked at her car’s thermometer, her heart broke. It was only 18 degrees outside and snow covered the ground.
It would be miserable for anyone to be outside in that kind of weather, but this man didn’t even have a coat to protect him from the elements. He was wearing a sweatshirt and hat, but it was obvious those weren’t enough to ward off the bitter cold.
Overwhelmed by the man’s sad state, Christina began to cry. She knew she couldn’t just pass him by and not do anything to help.
Ignoring the other things she had to do that day, Christina drove straight to Burlington Coat factory and bought “the warmest coat I could find.”
As she sped back to where she had first seen the man, she prayed he would still be there. Thankfully, he was!
Christina got out of her car, walked up to the man, and showed him what she had brought.
“I put it on him, zipped it up, gave him a hug, and wished him a Merry Christmas,” she said.
The man was incredibly touched by Christina’s kindness and generosity. As someone used to being ignored and invisible, the fact the someone would go out of their way to show him kindness, compassion, and love was overwhelming.
Christina shared her story in the hopes that others might see it and be encouraged to show similar acts of kindness to those in need, and it has since gone viral. Many people have been touched by her actions and have vowed to do more to help those in their own communities.
What a beautiful gesture and an incredible reminder of how humans should treat each other. Let’s not get so wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays that we forget to look out for our fellow man. After all, isn’t love what this season is all about?
We all have a little good inside us. Share it today!
