So what happens when a circus lion finally finds freedom? They can’t be released back into the wild, some are killed for their coats but some lucky ones end up in a sanctuary, where they can live out the remainder of their days in comparative luxury.
A highly moving video has gone viral which shows the rescue of ‘Will’ a lion that had been on the performance trail for over 13 years in Brazil.
The Video was uploaded by ‘Rancho dos Gnomos Santuário’ a non profit (known as Ecological Sanctuary Association in english) sanctuary outside Sao Paulo that has spent over 24 years looking after wild, domestic, and exotic animals that have been affected by abuse, circuses, cockfighting, trafficking, the fur industry, accidents and deforestation.
The video above shows “the thrilling moment Will experiences, for the first time, the feeling of soil and grass beneath his feet,” according to the Cotia-based sanctuary.
Before that, Will reportedly spent his life with a traveling circus in Brazil. “For 13 long years, the lion had been confined to a cramped cage and denied any semblance of a normal existence,” the sanctuary writes.
Resembling the actions of that of playful kitten, Will, the lion who is a relative ‘old man’ for his species, goes crazy for the grassy ground and soil which is very tragically, a foreign material for a creature who, up until then, had known only cold metal floors.
Simply put, Animals are not meant to be kept in the kinds of conditions that Will the Lion endured for over 13 years..
